The popular folk dances of the Magar community living in and around the Gandak region of Nepal are Salaijo, Sorathi, Maruni, Ghatu, Jharmre, Janai, Ohli, Nachan, Kauraha etc. Kauraha is the most popular of these dances.

The Rishing area of Tanahun district is the birthplace of the Kauraha (Kaura) dance which reflects the original culture and identity of the Magar community. Kauraha dance is a dance in which the Renjes (young men) sit in a group and play khanjadi and the Amams (young women) stand in a line and dance  in front of each other. Kauraha was danced from Chaitra to Jeth but nowadays people dance this the whole year (12 months) on various occasions.

Young Magar youths dressed in traditional costumes participate in the Kauraha dance. Young women wears Gunyu, Cholo, Ghalek, yellow or blue belt around waist, headband, earrings, bulaki on the nose, jantar on the neck, muga, kantha, chura on the hand, Jharr on ths leg and young men wears bhotos, kachads, green, yellow or blue tunics, white shirt and waist coat and hats.

According to Mr Dan  Bahadur Ale Magar, the author of the book ‘Rodi and Kauraha dance’ which is popular among the Adibadi Magar. The main feature of Kauraha dance is that young men and women dressed in traditional Magar costume can entertain the audience by dancing to the rhythms of songs and rhythms related to lifestyle.  In this dance none of the instruments is used except the khanjadi played by the young men and the jharra worn by the women. There is a tradition that only unmarried women participate in Kauraha dance and only young men sing. Kauraha is also a good opportunity for young people to choose their spouse. Since it is customary for young women to invite young men from nearby villages to come to their village by accepting the invitation. It helps in developing social harmony and the popularity of Kauraha is not just limited to the Magar community but amongs the Gurung, Darai and Dura communities as well.
