Commercial Fruit Farming

2022 -05- 13

Farmer Sher Bahadur Taru Thapa of Kuhunshivpur, Garangadi tole cultivates commercial uits. He has planted oranges, lemons and avocados in his 10 ropani lands.

Farmer Thapa who has been cultivating fruits since 2055 BS has 150 orange, 200 lemon and 18 avocado plants in his garden. He sells his fruits in Pokhara and Damauli. Traders also come to his garden to buy oranges, lemons and avocados. His annual income is Rs 4 lakh.

Farmer Thapa says that he is not able to get the expected income from fruit farming due to the outbreak of diseases like Tristeza virus and other diseases on oranges or lemons. According to him, the incidence of these diseases is especially high in oranges and lemons. This lives inside by digging holes in the branches of oranges or lemons and the plant dies when the branches dry out. Dry branches are cut and removed for pest control. Similarly leaf spot disease causes the plant to turn yellow, the leaves fall off and eventually the plant dies. To control the disease they make a liquid of nilotutho and sprinkle it on orange or lemon trees. However, he said that he felt the need to learn appropriate techniques for controlling diseases and pests as the known prevention measures were not very effective.
